Crib Bar

KANE LOOKED UP FROM his newspaper when his saloon door flew open.

“You better have a good hot cup of American coffee waiting for us, Yank, or we’re swimming to another pub?” Jane was holding the umbrella for Naomi, who hurried in from the rain.

Jane and Naomi settled onto the bar stools across from Kane.

“That tan of yours is going to fade in this gloomy weather,” Kane said, handing them both a dry towel.

“We all should move to the Bahamas if this rain keeps up,” Naomi said after she wiped her face.

“Have they fixed your leak yet,” Kane started pouring coffee for both?

“No, I’m still staying in Sue Lee’s apartment. Hopefully, later this week, they say the rain will pass through.” Naomi returned the towel to Kane just as Jacob shuffled out from his kitchen.

“Welcome back Doctor, sorry I wasn’t here when you arrived last week.” Jane was told by Kane that Jacob was on his annual weekly visit to the VA hospital. He had a couple of old army buddies he would share his time with. “We all missed you; how’s your Uncle?”

“He’s okay, Jacob, and he sends his best.” She said, jumping off her stool to hug him, and she stood back for a better look. “I say; Your so healthy-looking Jacob, what’s your secret?”

“Not rightly sure, It could be I’m not a time traveler yet. “

“You have been reading too many Comic Books,” Kane smiled as he passed the cream to Jane and Naomi.

Jane held up her hand before the others could start laughing.

“What do you mean by that, Jacob?” Jane was curious she had older hospital patients who had expounded their theories to her about aging. It amazed her how many younger doctors wouldn’t take the time to listen. “Please tell us.”

“Well, you become old when you look back more than forward. I reckon that’s when you become a time traveler?” He said sadly.

“Did you have some problems when you were at the VA hospital, Jacob?” Naomi asked before sipping her coffee.

“Yeah, one of my buddies has traveled so far into the past. He’ll never come back.”

Jane thought he looked remorseful. He walked away, then stopped. “Oops, I just realized why I came out here. I have information for you about the lady you are looking for, Ellen Cameron.” It surprised all three after spending a week trying to find any information about Ellen Cameron.

“Tells what you know, Jacob,” Jane asked politely before Kane went into a long tirade about how hard they have been looking.

“It’s my comic books. You see. Cameron was a comic book publisher and now living in Carmel. She collects art and is friends with several artists. Paul Kruger, who recently passed, was one of them. I like his landscapes. I remember he was exhibiting at the Panama–Pacific International Exposition, here in San Francisco in 1915.”

Jacob! Kane held up his hand, “What about Ellen Cameron? He knew how his friend could get off on a tangent. How did you find this out? Do you have any idea where in Carmel she lives?”

“Shorty told me.
